"Volunteer Hours"

I had the opportunity to do my volunteer hours at the event “Welcome Back BBQ” at Hialeah campus. Helping at the event was a nice experience because I had never had the opportunity to work in an event for the school. The event was in January and it was a way for the school to say welcome back to their students. At the event professors were working making the burgers on the grill, and also hotdogs. For some reason almost everyone preferred the burgers instead of the hotdogs. There were also lettuce, tomatoes and 3 different types of cheese. I was serving the lettuce and the cheese. A lot of students and professors were helping at the event.
I also helped setting up the tables, were the food was going to be serve. There were music and games too. Everything came out very good. I met new friends at the event. I really enjoyed helping, I would definitely help again in other event if I have the opportunity.

Two Interesting Stories

The story of Araby and A& P, both were affected by the setting in a negative way. The writers described the setting with a lot details.
In the story of “Araby” we find this boy named Joyce, who is in love with a girl. The boy is always secretly observing her, and when they finally came to converse, the girl ask him if is going to the fair, and tells him that she can not go, to this he respond that if he goes he will buy something to her. Then the boy is patiently waiting for his aunt to arrive home so the aunt could give him money to go to the fair. Is not until 10pm that his uncle arrives and despite of how late it is, Joyce departs to the fair. When he arrives, he finds that everything is closing. Disappointed, he couldn’t buy anything to the girl.
The fact that his uncle arrived home late and that the fair was closing makes the story been affected by the setting in a negative way.
I think that it would work out if for instance the uncle would have arrived at 4pm. In this case Joyce would have got the money early, arrived early to the fair and would of have bought something to the girl.

In the story of A&P the setting impacts the story in a bad way as well. In this story there is this guy named Sammy who works in a supermarket. Three girls came in wearing bathing suit, the manager get angry about that and make them live and tells them not to come back wearing bathing suit. Sammy gets disappointed and decides to quit.
The fact that 3 girls go to a supermarket wearing bathing suit makes the story gives a negative turn, Sammy quits.
The story would of worked better if the place were the girls went would of have been a beach- store supermarket and Sammy would have worked there.

Cathedral

Cathedral is a very interesting script. The narrator, who is known as the husband and Bub, gives the impression that he feels sort of like a type of jealousy for the friendship that his wife and Robert, the blind man, have. Robert has recently lost his wife and he is now visiting his friends. Bub is bothered by the fact that a blind man is coming to stay in his house for a period of time.
Apparently Bub doesn’t have a good conception about blind people. For some reason he thinks they are not smart. Bub even feels sorry for who it was Robert’s wife, just because he thinks that it must be very frustrate to have someone who can not tell you how good you look.
Everything happened when Bub and Robert were watching documentary about cathedrals. It’s obviously that Bub knows nothing about Cathedral, still being able to see them while Robert did, without seeing them.
Robert asked Bub to draw a cathedral with him, its then when something fills Bub, an emptiness that he had is being filled by this blind man. Bub is the character that changed at the end of the script.

A work of art that makes us reflect upon life- "The Game"

Another work of art that makes us reflect upon life is the film “The Game” directed by David Fincher is a film that also makes anyone reflect about appreciating things in life. Nicholas Van Orton, who is the main character, is a successful businessman, but his success has come at the cost of his family. Nicholas doesn’t know how to appreciate the value that family has. On Nicholas's 48th birthday, Conrad, his brother, presents him with a gift, a game offered by a company called Consumer Recreation Services, promising that it will change Nicholas' life.
The main character of the film “The Game”, Nicholas, has lost his family for his ambition. Nicholas goes about life in a cold, detached manner and seems incapable of expressing emotion or caring for anyone outside of himself. The ambition for money, has make him a lonely person, without friends and with out family. For his birthday his youngest brother gave him a gift, which is a game that a company offers, but little did Nicholas know that the game would change every aspect of his life. What this game does is that it takes away everything that Nicholas has, which is his money. At the end of the movie the change of Nicholas is very noticeable; Nicholas starts socializing with people and starts caring about others. This movie is not that far from reality. Sometimes humans close themselves in a frame of selfishness not letting them care for other but themselves, taking for granted their family and those people that really care for them. Sometimes it takes for something to happen for people recognize their errors, just like it happened with Nicholas.
In the film another detail that anyone can reflect about is when Nicholas’ youngest brother greeted him for his birthday and told Nicholas that “what can he give to a person who has everything in the world”. By the face that Nicholas put, anyone can tell that he truly agreed with his brother. There was apparently nothing that he needed, because he had everything that money could buy. Reflecting on this quote, Nicholas was poor in many spiritual things; he didn’t have his family and was very selfish with the people that surrounded him. Nicholas at first didn’t care about anyone nor their feelings, but at the end of the film he learned how to appreciate others.

Facts About Turtles

I am an animal lover and one of my favorite animal besides cats, are turtle. I love the small turtles. There are many interesting facts about turtles that I didn’t know until I saw a documental the other day. To start off turtles have been on earth for 200 years more or less.

For some reason I thought that turtles can completely come out of their shell, but I found out that that’s not true. Some facts about them that called my attention were that there are about 300 species of turtles; you can find turtles in every continent except in Antarctica. Did you know what it is called to a group of turtles? The answer is “BALE”, interesting huh? Another interesting fact is that not all turtles have hard shells; for example the sea turtls have a flexible shell. A funny fact that I also find out is that turtles breath by their anus.

Cloned Meat?!

The other day a friend of my told that some supermarkets might be selling meat form cloned animals. I opposed to that. While searching about this topic I found that there is not a label that can differentiate this cloned meat from the regular meat. The fact that there is not a label that states weather the meat is cloned or not makes me have an issue with it. I found that the FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) is not requiring that the food industry labels this type of meat. I think that there should be a law that obligates the food industry to labels cloned meat. The NAS is researching about the consequences that cloned meat might have on our health. I personally think that although is too soon to tell, producing this type of meat can be very risky. Since cloned animals are “created” in a lab, many errors can occur, making the meat unsafe for consumption.

"Those Winter Sundays" Great Poem --- (one of my favorites)

The poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hyden, is one of my favorite poems. I like the way that Hyden captured the emotions of the reader. The tone of the poem is a melancholy one. That’s the tone that I perceived when I read it. “And put his clothes on the blue-black cold. / Then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made/ banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him” (lines 2-5). The fact that the father will wake up early in a very cold weather to warm up the house for his family and no one ever thanked him makes the reader sense a tone of sadness. “Speaking indifferently to him, who had driven out the cold/ and polished my good shoes as well” (lines 10-13). In these lines, a sense of sadness can also be perceived.
“Those Winter Sundays” describes the hard work of a dad towards his family. “Sundays too my father got up early/ and puts his clothes on in the blue-black cold” (lines 1-2). In these lines the writer tells how his father wakes up early on Sundays under a very cold weather. The writer makes the message of the poem very clear by using certain words. The writer makes the reader believes by using the word “too” (line 1) that his father wakes up every day under the cold weather. Also the word “blue- black” tells the reader that the weather under which the father wakes up every day is a very cold weather. The father will wake up Sundays too very early in the morning to warm up the house, and once the house was warm, the father will wake up his son. The poem is sad; the author didn’t realize the headwork his father was doing towards him.
I like this poem because of the feelings perceived while reading it; the author sure knows how to use connotations. This felling can be perceived by the reader from the first time reading it, and that’s the reason why I like this poem, besides that it is understandable.

Reaction to "The Story of an Hour"

Irony for me is when saying something, but meaning something else. Irony can also be when expecting something and getting something completely different. In the story of an hour irony is definitely present when Mrs. Millard receives the news that her husband had die. Mrs. Millard was supposed to be sad, but contrary to that she was happy because she was free. Then everything turns out to be a misunderstanding because Mrs. Millard’s husband was not dead at all, and when Mrs. Millard saw her husband she died of the emotion. I think that this was clearly an example of irony.

opinion about the story "The Lottery"

While I was reading “The Lottery” story, at first I thought it was a positive game, from my point of view, but when I saw that Mrs. Hutchinson was saying that it was “unfair” my point of view changed. This story bothered me a lot. In this village people were fallowing a very old tradition, and it was rule that everyone participate on it. The lottery consisted in that every household will had to pick a paper and one of the households should be eliminate it. In the story the one that the villagers killed was Mrs. Hutchinson. A fact that bothered me because at first it was going to be her husband and she said that it was unfair, then they repeats it and she came out. The way they kill the “winner” was by throwing stones to he or she, in this case was Mrs. Hutchinson.
This story I saw it as a hard-heart it because it was the family of the winner they would threw stones to them without any feelings. I think that as members of a society, we don’t always have agreed with the society. One must stands for what we believe.

Cuba Embargo

The U.S. imposed a limited economic embargo against Fidel Castro's Cuba in 1960, during the Eisenhower administration. The embargo was imposed after Cuba nationalized banks, oil refineries, and other U.S. business interests there. Earlier in 1960, President Eisenhower approved a secret plan to overthrow the Castro regime. The plan included a propaganda campaign and the organization of a paramilitary force to invade the island. In 1963, after the Cuban Missile Crisis and the embarrassment at the Bay of Pigs, the U.S. expanded its unilateral economic embargo of Cuba. Its purpose: "The basic goal of the sanctions is to isolate Cuba economically and deprive it of U.S. dollars."
In my opinion I believe that the embargo between Cuba and the United States have not been effective. The Cuba Embargo is only hearting the U.S economy, its international image and Cuba’s people. Lifting the embargo would greatly benefit both the United States and Cuba.

Criminal Court House Synopsis

On Monday April 5th, 2010, I went to the Criminal Courthouse located on 13th Ave N.W 14th Street for an assigment of my American Federal Government class. I went to one of the court room in the fourth floor with the Judge Beatriz Butchko. I heard to more than 10 cases. Most of them had to do with the possession of arms, street fights and robbery.
The courthouse looked very typical, like the one that comes out in movies. The judge wore a black robe and loose hair. In the court there was, a female judge, there were like three women dressed in black. These women would read a case and the judge sometimes will ask questions to one of them. There was also a security person that was in charged of maintaining the order. If someone was talking loud he would tell that person to be quite. A few lawyers were in the courtroom as well as public defenders. There was a woman that was typing everything said in the court. Sometime one of the women dressed in black would speak low and the judge would be- “Man I need you to speak loud, so she could write it down”. To the right side of the courtroom there were two vertical rows were the prisoner were to seat. There were ten prisoners more or less; they were all dressed in orange. Something that I noticed was that all the others that were accused, not the prisoner, were dressed very formal; with suit.
At 9 am when everything started the courtroom was not that crowed. By 9:30am it was a little bit more crowed, but not as the courtroom that was in front of it. The courtroom in front of the one where I was was completely full. That was the one that I wanted to go but I couldn’t because it was over crowed.
The cases were not that long it was only ten minutes more or less. I don’t know if the person received a fair trial. I could barely understand when the women dressed in black speak; they didn’t have a microphone, like the judge did. That day, one of the prisoners was set free. Most of the prisoners were set for another trial in June.
One of the prisoner was and old man. When the judge was handling his case, she told him that he didn’t have to stand up. I assumed that he had a problem in his legs. Then when I left the courtroom a female officer was taking him to another place and suddenly I heard a crack. When I look, the old man fall and hit his head. The old man was bleeding and the floor was full of blood. The female officer called for help on a radio and a lot of officers and security officers came. A woman who was in the hallway started to shout-“Let him free, it was the officer the one who let him fall”.
Another prisoner was for six years in jail. After the judge said that a woman ran out the courtroom crying. I felt pity for her apparently that was her son.
Something that called my attention about the judge was that in one case the judge asked one of the woman dressed in black to remember her about the case they were just handling. I have never been to a court before, so I don’t know if that’s something normal. Also when the judge was handling one of the prisoner cases, the judge told the prisoner that he was a gift to her from another judge, and that she hoped that he would behave well with her.

Comparing two Work of Literature

Some people take for granted what parents do for them, others are more mature to see the hard work and sacrifices that their parents are doing just for them. In the poems “Digging” by Seamus Heaney and “Those Winter days” by Robert Hayden, both seem to reflect about the hard work, respect and dedication of their parents. However something that contrasts both poems is that in the poem “Digging”, the sense of respect is present through out the whole poem and in the poem “Those Winter Sundays” is not until the end that the author starts to reflect about his father effort and commitment towards him.

The Message of the movie "The Ultimate Gift"

The message of the film "The Ultimate Gift" is a precious one. This movie teaches a valuable lesson to anyone who sees. This film makes us reflect that in life there are more important things other than money. It teaches that money is not everything. Something that I enjoyed from this movie was seeing how Jason, the main character, changed. At first he was spoiled and greedy. He didn’t care about anyone but himself, but towards the end a big change in Jason can be seen when he inverts all the money that he inherits to create a hospital for children with cancer.

Eden Island

Last summer I decided to get my dad’s boat and go for a boat trip across the beach. I got so entertain fallowing dolphins that I got lost in the sea. Trying to go back I ran out of gas, but luckily for me the waves took me to an island’s shore. I had never seen this island before; I didn’t even know that it existed. It was dark, very dark, and huge trees surround it the island.
I was to scare to go and explore the island because of the scary sounds and the darkness. Without noticing I fall asleep and wake up the next day at seven in the morning, I knew it because of my watch. I was very hungry and thirsty. My hunger made me explore the island for food. I walked about four or five miles. Then I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing. This is amazing- I said. In front of me was a big- wide lake with a waterfall. The lake was so clear that if it wasn’t for the water current I would have thought that it was a crystal lake. In the lake there were fish of every color and size. There were some fish that called my attention the most because of their huge rainbow tail.
This place was surrounded by huge fruit trees and flowers. There were apple, pear, banana, strawberry, peach, mangos, and any fruit trees I could think of. I had never seen trees as big as those and the fruits were big too. There were flowers of every type and every color. There were orquids, tulips, roses, lavender and many more. Near waterfall I saw a bear; they were eating some red and yellow fruits that I had never seen. I got scared because those bears were over size, they were huge. I also saw some cubs, running, following some butterflies. A group of lions were resting under a durian tree. Some elephants were drinking water from the lake and giraffes were eating from acacia trees. When I saw those giraffe eating from the tress was then that I realized that the trees were about two- hundred feet tall. I got so scared when I saw all these wild animals that I fainted.
When I came to realization again I was surrounded by tigers and lions. These lions and tiger had very vivid colors. The lions were almost gold and their mane was dark brown the tigers were rich yellow with golden brown stripes. One lion was licking my face. When I saw this, my heart started to beat so fast that I thought that it would pop out. Then the lions and tigers started to act in a playful way, and suddenly I found myself playing with them and they did not hurt me. I had fun. After that I passed by the bears that were eating some leafs and they did nothing to me. I realize that these wild animals could not hurt me.
I was starving and very thirsty, so I went to a mango tree to eat some mangos, but they were so high that I could not reach them. I looked for a rock to throw but I found no rock in that place. The giraffes were passing by and I climbed their neck and was then that I was able to grab some mangoes. I also grabbed bananas and strawberry, thanks to the giraffes. I looked so little next to these monstrous animals. After I finished eating my fruits, I went to the lake to drink water. Ahhhh the water tasted so good, it tasted like purified water. While I was getting water I saw a group of dolphins swimming by. They looked as if they wanted me to get in the lake, but I was scared because the lake seemed very deep and their big size scared me as well. I felt something that pushed me into the water, I don’t know what it was, but I am glad I got into the water because I had the biggest experience ever; I swam with the big dolphins and one of them brought me into the ground.
I felt like resting, so I laid myself on the rich green grass. The grass felt like silk. I was looking up to the sky and I saw big birds flying around. The air was whistling and I could feel the rusting of leafs. A group of swans were passing through the lake- ohhh what a beautiful and peaceful scene, this place I would call it Eden Island- I said. In one of the branches of the oak tree where I was laying my head, there were two love birds singing a beautiful melody, and along with the sound of the falling water from the waterfall and the sweet scent of the flowers, I fall asleep. When I woke up I found out that I was in the backyard of my house resting in my hammock.

What is Literature for Me

Literature can be considered a piece of art, words written down, in the form of a play, a song, a
poem, a story and much more. It can simply be a combination of two words, going beyond what was written down. Literature has a function for everyone, and has the power to entertain, to enhance knowledge about everything in this world and out of it. With the help of literature humans can reflect about real life matters.

Literature is important in human’s life it let the writers expose their experiences in a piece of paper so the reader later on could reflect on it, and if the reader is wise enough, he or she would not commit the same error. Through literature, we can learn from the past, reflect in the present, and change the future.

My interpretation of Invisible Cities

While reading Invisible Cities, I must admit that at first I didn’t understand it. It was until the second time that I read it that I figured it out what he was really trying to say. Calvino, the writer, was actually trying to pictured in the readers mind something else than some fantasy cities. This is how I interpreted it.
Armilla is the city with water pipes raised vertically. Armilla was the city that according to the author was created for the nymphs so human could be forgiven for the misuse of water. This city says about us that we misuse the water. Zobeide, which is the city were dreams are followed, say about us that sometimes people focused too much in a dream and when achieving the dream gets tough we forget about it. Morianna is a city that when first seen, it’s beautiful, it has chandeliers and crystal lakes, but when you walk a semi-circle you come into the view of Marianna’s hidden face, an expanse of rusting sheet metal, sackcloth, planks, est. This city says about us that many people have more than one faces. Sometimes we meet a person and at first they are nice and kind but when we get to really meet that person another face is seen. Ersilia is a city of relationship. Ersilia tells about us that in life it’s important to built relationships. I would say that it’s something essential in life. Thekla is a city that has been under construction since ever and never gets finish because they want it perfect. Humans are like that sometimes, they start something we take our time until everything is perfect, but in life nothing is perfect. Argia is a lifeless city. It is an underground city and its cover by dirt. The city seems lifeless except when you put your ear to the ground, you some times hear door slam. This tells that there might be the possibility of an after life. Olinda is a city that it is open to new traditions, but it holds its old one. This say about us that with years new traditions comes, but are old ones should never be forgotten.
